Commemorative River Stones
The central focus of the memorial is a dry streambed containing smooth river stones engraved with the names of victims of homicide. Each stone will be similar in size but unique much like the victims they represent.

Tragic Density
The streambed begins with a huge circular black granite stone called "Tragic Density", which symbolizes the enormous weight of sadness and grief.

Ibis Ascending
The streambed moves through the Garden and culminates with a trickle of water into a pool out of which rises "Ibis Ascending", a skyward sculpture representing hope.

The Garden:

  • Is located at the seat of the Commonwealth's government
  • Is approximately 7000 square feet
  • Includes a community gathering space
  • Includes seat walls throughout the garden
  • Includes a Recognition Wall that will honor donors
  • Includes yew trees, birch trees & native ground cover
  • Includes a handicap accessible path

Construction was completed in the summer of 2004 >>
