Why this Memorial is Important

Losing a loved one through violence is a wrenching experience for the victim's family and friends. Immediate survivors discover firsthand the importance of paying homage, seeking solace and hope, and working for peace. In the absence of acknowledgment, the human tendency for denial will prevail and recognition of the negative impact of violence will be suppressed.

Our efforts long precede the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, which roused all Americans, from their complacency regarding our safety within a free society. We are aware that the Garden of Peace addresses the collective sorrow of our city and our nation regarding these catastrophic losses. Our goal of increasing awareness of the cost of violence to our society will be enhanced by the fact that the Garden of Peace will
